How I Managed to Sell My Car

One thing the UK is famous (or perhaps infamous) for is the abundance of second hand cars always on the market. It's a buyer's paradise, or hell, if you make the wrong decision. Caveat emptor as they say. But what about from the seller's perspective? All that competition! It's tough, that's for sure. But I found a very simple way to sell my car - I was honest.

Yep, honest.

My car's biggest selling point was that it had low mileage - a real plus-point for any car. It's what every buyer is on the lookout for - low mileage, and if possible, low price (a difficult combination to find). Mine happened to be in that category though.

So why the low price? The engine was on its last legs. A lack of oil at one point almost destroyed the engine outright, but it caused enough damage that really I couldn't sell this car without the big negative bullet point of "needs new engine". I braced myself for silence (if you can do such a thing) when I put my ad in the paper. But surprise, surprise. Three car dealers called up over the weekend - saw potential in the car, and I had three offers. I introduced a very rough kind of Dutch auction between the three of them (me relaying to others the latest offers) and I ended up getting twice what the original offer price was. It's better to be honest than lie, and then get found out soon after the sale.
