Long Term Car Rental

Having just returned from my two month trip to New Zealand, my mind is reeling from all the wonderful scenery I saw, and experiences I had there. If there's one thing I'd recommend anyone who's thinking of touring the long white cloud (what the Maori's call New Zealand), it's to look for long term car rental options there. Let's face it, you don't go to New Zealand to sit on some beach for 2 weeks. You go there to TOUR because there's just so much to see, and since it's so far away from anywhere on the planet, people tend to visit the country for at least a month.

You need your own wheels in New Zealand, no doubt about it. I've tried hitching rides there, and it is hitch-hiker friendly, but you have to realise : there's just not that many cars on the roads in much of NZ, especially the south island! - you could be waiting for hours. Public transport is OK in New Zealand, but you can't beat the freedom of having a car and being able to go where you like and when you like. Your own car means you can explore those areas that public transport just won't reach, and you can also appreciate the peace and quiet of the more remote areas better on your own (or with a few friends or family) than 50 other tourists on a bus.

Some people have bought cheap second hand cars there, but they're a hassle. They can break down, and that's one thing you don't want to do in the wilderness. Also you'll struggle to sell it because you just won't have the time. A lot of people literally abandon their second hand cars at the airport before flying home. No, you should rent a car - it's the sane way to travel around New Zealand without any worries mate!
