Long Term Van Hire
Starting your own business is always a risky venture, whatever your business model. As for me, I started a plumbing service in my area. I'm a Gas Safe registered plumber who'd worked for a firm for five years, but I wanted to go it alone as I knew there was serious money to be made if I went self-employed. However, I needed some wheels - a van to be specific! Now, we all know the UK is a wonderland when it comes to secondhand vehicles - you can pick up anything here pretty cheaply - but it's a real lottery. No, if I was to properly set up a business, I'd need to buy a new van. After checking the prices of new vans, I'd re-considered secondhand again - yes, the prices were extortionate! Oh, to stick or twist on this dilemma. But...I still knew that a van was an investment. Just - I was worried my business wouldn't take off, and I'd be stuck with a van I didn't really need. I was in a real bind about this - it was a proper conundrum. I eventually resolved to hire a van first. There were a lot of long term van hire options in my home town, and it was a happy medium between buying a new van outright, and buying second-hand. I could even sign-write on the van to advertise my services too! I'd hire for 3 months, and if the business looked like it would be taking off, I'd buy myself a van for the business.
And that's my advice to anyone starting a business - don't over invest in those early days. Take cautious steps before committing lots of funds to your business. You have to test the waters first.
