Ways To Prevent Car Theft

Having your car stolen is the nightmare we all dread. The insurance will cover our financial costs, but there's the hassle factor, the stress of losing your car with all its idiosynchrasies, and all-round general trauma of being a victim of such a serious crime. There are ways to avoid being such a victim however, and we'll cover some basic tips to help you prevent this happening to you:-

  • Take your keys with you. Yes, Captain Obvious here. But did you know that 20% of car thefts occur because the keys were left in the ignition? That quick 30 seconds dash into the shop presents an ideal opportunity for a thief
  • Lock your car. Again, obvious right? 50% of those who have their car stolen disagree it's obvious - they didn't lock their car.
  • Don't keep a spare set of keys in the car - a stereo theft can turn into a car theft just by a rummage in the glove compartment.
  • Don't park in the dark - it's ideal cover for a thief. Make it difficult for them and park near a streetlight.
  • Don't leave valuables lying around in the car
  • Use your handbrake when parking - believe it or not, some thieves tow cars
  • Make sure your windows are fully wound up.
  • Park near other cars - safety in numbers
